Ex-Brazilian president begins jail 12-year-jail term; Nigerian politicians walk free
April 6, 2018
Corruption Fight: Brazil’s former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has lost his fight to delay his 10-year jail sentence for corrupt practices.
Lula had been sentenced to jail last July after being convicted on corruption and money laundering charges.
In January, an appeal court unanimously upheld the conviction and increased the sentence to 12 years.
After failing in his bid to delay serving his jail term, Lula will now begin his 12 year prison term from Friday (today).
In Nigeria, no past president since the end of military rule has been successfully tried on corruption charges, despite damning allegations.
Politicians alleged to have misappropriated public funds continue to walk free.
