UPDATE: Ex-Bayelsa governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha dies of “hypertension”
October 10, 2015
Former Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha is dead.
Former State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Ebitimi Agary, reportedly confirmed that Alamieyeseigha died of hypertension.
Alamieyeseigha was a close ally of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
There were indications he could be extradited to the UK to face corruption charges.
The indications came amid the ongoing “trial” of former petroleum minister Diezani Allison-Madueke.
In 2007, Alamieyeseigha pleaded guilty before a Nigerian court to six charges and was sentenced to two years in prison on each charge. The terms ran concurrently.
In March 2013, Jonathan granted Alamieyeseigha presidential pardon.
