El-Zakzaky denied bail again as court adjourns trial until after election
Shiite Muslim leader Ibrahim El-Zakzaky will continue his stay at DSS custody, the court has ruled today.
El-Zakzaky has been locked up since December 2015, when he was accused by the Federal Government of causing public unrest with his followers.
A clash in Kaduna with security operatives during a march had led to the death of many of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) members, including El-Zakzaky’s children.
The IMN leader and his wife, Zeenat, were arrested following the clash and are facing trial over allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, and disruption of public peace.
Since the time, the FG has been accused of refusing to obey court orders to release him.
El-Zakzaky’s continued detention has led to more clashes between his followers and security operatives, with the most recent being a deadly face-off in October 2018.
He was denied bail last November, as the judge cited that his lawyer had failed to support his request for bail with enough medical evidence.
The presiding judge at the Kaduna State High Court, on Tuesday (today), adjourned his trial to March 25, to enable him and his wife get proper medical attention.
