Colombia confirms 3,000 pregnant women have Zika Virus, asks women to stop getting pregnant
President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, made the announcement on live television.
He said more than 3,100 pregnant women have been infected with the Zika virus and that a total of 25,645 people were infected in the country.
However no case of Microcephaly, the birth defect said to be resultant from the virus, has been reported in the country yet.
Babies affected with the disease are born with abnormally small heads and an underdeveloped brain.
According to Santos, Columbia could “end up having 600,000 cases of the virus”.

He said the government will try to fight mosquitoes, the major carrier of the disease, across the country by fumigating and helping families rid their homes of stagnant.
He also added that pregnant women with the virus will be eligible to access abortion services which are usually very restricted in the country.
The government also urged women to delay pregnancy for six to eight months.
The World Health Organisation just recently declared the Zika Virus a medical emergency..
