China Condemns U.S. Military Support for Taiwan Amid Escalating Tensions

China's President, Xi Jinping

China has expressed strong opposition to U.S. President Joe Biden’s approval of a $571.3 million defense assistance package for Taiwan, calling it a serious violation of its sovereignty and security interests.

The White House announced on Friday that Biden had authorized the drawdown of defense articles, services, and military education and training from the Department of Defense for Taiwan. The package comes less than three months after another aid allocation of $567 million to the self-ruled island.

“This move gravely infringes on China’s sovereignty and security interests,” China’s foreign ministry stated on Sunday, adding that it “firmly opposes this action” and has lodged a formal protest with Washington.

Although the United States does not officially recognize Taiwan diplomatically, it remains the island’s largest weapons supplier and a key strategic ally. The new defense package underscores Washington’s commitment to supporting Taiwan as tensions with Beijing continue to rise.

The details of the military assistance were not disclosed, but it follows the delivery of 38 advanced Abrams battle tanks to Taiwan earlier this week, reportedly the island’s first new tanks in three decades.

China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has intensified political and military pressure on the island in recent years. Beijing has consistently called on Washington to halt arms sales and other forms of assistance, warning of further strain on U.S.-China relations.

The approval of this latest defense package is likely to add fuel to the already volatile situation. Experts say it highlights the Biden administration’s unwavering support for Taiwan as it faces increasing threats from Beijing.
