Gunmen invade church in Ondo, abduct six worshippers

Gunmen have attacked a church in Ondo State, abducting six worshippers during a midnight service.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at a Celestial Church of Christ parish in Uso, located in Owo Local Government Area. According to authorities, the assailants stormed the church around 12:50 a.m. while congregants were gathered for worship and took six people away.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the attack and said a joint rescue operation was immediately launched. Police spokesperson Jimoh Abayomi stated that officers, working alongside the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, responded swiftly after receiving a distress report.

He disclosed that one of the abducted worshippers has since been rescued, while a suspect connected to the crime has been apprehended. The arrested individual is reportedly providing information to assist ongoing investigations.

Security agencies have assured residents that efforts are intensifying to secure the release of the remaining victims and bring all those involved in the attack to justice.

The latest incident comes just days after a couple was kidnapped in Ilu-Abo community in Akure North Local Government Area, heightening concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Ondo State.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives as investigations and rescue efforts continue.
