Child Abuse: NAPTIP arrests 2 women for maltreating maids

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) has arrested Sandra Obiosio, a 29-year-old mother of two, for allegedly inflicting wounds on her 12-year-old housemaid.

The indigene of Rivers State living in Jabi Area of Abuja was said to have brought the girl from Nassarawa State in 2017 as house help.

NAPTIP said in a statement that Obiosio and her husband subjected the girl to all manner of abuse and ill-treatment.

The girl, who looked malnourished, explained that she was woken up at 4a.m. every day to do chores and prepare Obiosio’s two children for school.

The maid, after she must have taken the children to school, proceeds to Jahi where the woman owns a shop. She said she doesn’t get home until 8p.m when she’d resume her chores.

She also claimed that she doesn’t not go to bed until between 1a.m. and 2a.m.

NAPTIP reported that, many times, the suspect would leave the maid with her less than a year old baby and go to bed.

Several parts of the victim’s body has been scarred from beatings.

NAPTIP said investigation was still ongoing.

The body also accused one Ifeoma Obinwa for allegedly inflicting wounds on her maid body with a knife at her home in Dutse Alhaji area in Abuja.

Ifeoma, a 29-year-old health worker and mother of two, allegedly scarred the maid because she beat up her child.

“The victim, who has lived with the suspect since 2015, was not enrolled into school and is always being physically and emotionally abused,” NAPTIP said.

“She is always being beaten by the suspect with sticks, wire and sharp objects and such treatment has left wounds and scars all over her body, including her head.

“The last incident that led to the suspect’s arrest happened on September 12, 2018 when the suspect, who accused the victim of beating her child, allegedly placed a knife on fire until it became very hot and then placed it on the victim’s thigh and buttocks, thereby leaving her with grievous body injuries. The victim was also left untreated until operatives of the agency rescued her.”
