BREAKING: Students seal office of UNILORIN lecturer for slapping SUG president

In the face of apparent unwillingness of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) authorities to discipline a lecturer over alleged assault, the student union body (SUG) has taken a bold step.

The SUG, this morning, sealed offices of the sub dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Tajudeen Kolawole Ajiboye.

Ajiboye allegedly slapped SUG president Lukman Sobowale on Monday. Students demanded he be fired. They also want a public apology.

But the lecturer said “heaven will not fall” and that “students should apologise to me”.

Students sealed Ajiboye’s office as lecturer.

UNILORIN Vice Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, had promised to investigate the matter but we understand he told Sobowale, on Wednesday, that Ajiboye’s denial of the alleged assault should be taken for an apology.

“If Dr. Ajiboye is not brought to book, we will take the book to him,” the SUG had vowed.

Student leaders sealed Ajiboye’s offices this morning.

SUG also sealed the office from which Ajiboye operates as sub dean.

The SUG, in a statement, said it made the move following the school’s unwillingness to act and Ajiboye’s refusal to apologise within a 24-hour ultimatum it gave the authorities.

“It is on this note that the student union will like to express its discontent, dissatisfaction and clear resentment and has therefore decided to seal the office of Dr. Ajiboye as a way of calling for a concerted effort in at ensuring that quickened justice is served,” the statement reads.

“Let it be made known, that the student union will never undermine or sabotage the stability of this university as it is our collective pride but will not rest until Dr. Ajiboye is brought to book for bringing disrepute and disdain to the revered and dignified office of the (SUG) president.”

Ajiboye: “Heaven will not fall”.

Hours after Ajiboye’s office was sealed, Sobowale – the student who was allegedly assaulted – reopened the office.

“God bless Sobowale whom in his thought considered it wise to reopen the sub dean’s office because of the ongoing exam so as not to disrupt anything,” a student wrote.

“It wows me how an undergraduate is wiser and deep in his thought than a doctor.
“Wisdom is more than certificate.”
