Best African Footballers from the weekend – Auba ensures the Gunners fire against Everton

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv enjoyed another great weekend of football action, with the continuation of the 2019/20 Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A campaigns.

In the Premier League, the top-performing African was Arsenal’s Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored two goals in the Gunners’ thrilling 3-2 home win over Everton on Sunday evening.

With Eddie Nketiah and Bakayo Sako (young English players of Ghanaian and Nigerian descent) combining for the first goal, and Auba’s winning goal set up by Ivorian Nicolas Pepe, there is a distinctly African flavor to this promising Arsenal team under manager Mikel Arteta.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Odion Ighalo made his Old Trafford debut in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Watford, while Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha played key roles for Crystal Palace in their vital 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

In La Liga, Yassine Bounou helped Sevilla to an impressive 3-0 away win at Getafe which greatly boosts their hopes of finishing in the top four, while the same can be said of Atletico Madrid following their 3-1 home triumph over Villarreal, with Thomas Partey getting the better of the Yellow Submarine’s Samuel Chukwueze and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

The game of the weekend in La Liga was the 3-3 draw between Real Betis and Mallorca, which featured Aissa Mandi in defence for the former, while Idrissu Mohammed and Junior Lago represented the latter.
