Benue lecturer remanded in prison for allegedly raping 13-year-old maid

A lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic is facing rape charges after allegedly having carnal knowledge of his 13-year-old housemaid.

Andrew Ogbuja, 51, was arraigned before the upper Area Court One in Makurdi on Monday.

The accused lecturer of the Department of Catering and Hotel Management was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of Elizabeth while she lived in his house.

The court heard that Andrew was reported to the police on August 8, 2018 by the body of women lawyers (FIDA) in Benue State.

One Mrs Rose Abah told the police that sometime in February 2018, Elizabeth told her that the son of a cousin sister she stayed with between 2013 and 2015 raped her.

The court further heard that Andrew, the cousin sister’s husband, also had his way with the minor.

The lecturer was arrested last Friday for the offence while his son, Victor, is at large.

Andrew, through his counsel David Ojile, however, pleaded with the judge to grant him bail to enable him go back home and resolve the matter amicably considering his status. He promised to take full responsibility for the treatment of the victim.

The judge, Justice Kwen, rejected the plea and sent the lecturer to Makurdi Federal Prison pending the determination of the matter. The case was adjourned to September 24.
