APC shuts national secretariat to honour Buhari
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the closure of its national secretariat in Abuja to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.
In a statement on Monday, Felix Morka, the party’s national publicity secretary, said the closure was directed by Bukar Dalori, the acting national chairman of the APC.
According to Morka, the secretariat will remain closed from Monday, July 14, and will reopen on Thursday, July 17.
“We urge party faithful to use this period of national mourning for quiet reflection and prayers for the repose of the soul of our departed leader,” he said.
Buhari, a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, served as military head of state between 1984 and 1985 before being elected civilian president in 2015. He secured a second term in office in 2019 and completed his tenure in 2023.
The APC’s decision comes as tributes pour in for the late president from both local and international leaders. Buhari is being remembered for his anti-corruption campaign, leadership style, and commitment to national unity.
In a related development, the National Assembly has also suspended legislative activities in honour of the late president.
Kamoru Ogunlana, clerk of the National Assembly, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
“I am directed by the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives to inform all members of the national assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July, 2025,” the statement reads.
Both the APC and the National Assembly have urged Nigerians to observe the mourning period with solemnity and reflection.
