“Consistent fuel supply during the festive season, NSE listing” – Key insights from Dangote on refinery expansion
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to cement Nigeria’s position as a global energy powerhouse, announcing a massive expansion that will nearly double its capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd), officially making it the largest single-train refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.
This historic expansion was unveiled at a recent press conference, where the Chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, attributed the ambitious move to the supportive policies of the Federal Government.
Dangote expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing initiatives like “Nigeria’s First,” “Naira-for-Crude,” and the “One-Stop Shop,” which he stated are strengthening industrialisation and driving a revolution in Nigeria’s downstream sector.
The expansion, Dangote noted, is in direct alignment with President Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria to emerge as a major global supplier of petroleum products.

1. Historic Expansion:
Dangote Petroleum Refinery is expanding its capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, making it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar…
The implications of this massive project extend far beyond mere capacity. The expansion is projected to deliver profound economic benefits for Nigeria:
•Foreign Exchange Savings: The project will save billions in foreign exchange, drastically reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported finished petroleum products.
•Job Creation: The construction phase alone is expected to create 65,000 direct and indirect jobs, opening vast opportunities for local industries and technology transfer. Over 85% of the workforce is committed to being Nigerian, underscoring a strong local content commitment.
•Petrochemical Growth: The refinery’s petrochemical output will see a significant boost, with polypropylene production increasing from 900,000 metric tonnes to 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum. This growth will also enrich the production of linear alkylbenzene, a key ingredient for detergents, and additional base oils.
In a commitment to environmental stewardship, the expanded refinery will upgrade to Euro VI fuel standards, achieving top-tier global environmental benchmarks. Furthermore, the facility’s power generation capacity is also set to grow, ensuring complete operational self-reliance and energy security.
Addressing concerns about fuel supply, Dangote assured Nigerians of a steady fuel supply during the ember months, promising a festive season free from the perennial fuel queues and price hikes, despite global oil price volatility.
The press conference concluded with a powerful continental call-to-action. Dangote urged holders of the other 30 refinery licenses to join the national mission of making Nigeria the refining hub of Africa, stating, “When Africa builds its own capacity, it builds its own destiny.”
Finally, in a move towards broad ownership and transparency, Dangote announced plans to list 10% of Dangote Refinery & Petrochemical shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange within one year.
