How Anthony Joshua’s Powerful Right-hand Knocked Out Francis Ngannou In Round Two

Anthony Joshua

In the much-anticipated showdown between Nigeria-born Anthony Joshua and Cameroonian Francis Ngannou, Joshua delivered a stunning right-hand blow that knocked the former UFC Champion out cold in the second round of their match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in the early hours of Saturday, March 9, 2024.

Following impressive triumphs over Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, and Otto Wallin in 2023, Joshua’s victory marked his fourth consecutive win.

Billed “Knockout Chaos,” the bout between the two was highly anticipated, particularly due to Ngannou’s reputation as a formidable opponent. Ngannou, a former UFC Champion, made his debut in professional boxing in October 2023 against Tyson Fury, whom he knocked down but lost the match in a controversial split decision.

However, in his match against Joshua, Ngannou failed to showcase the strength and stamina that captivated millions of boxing fans during his debut match last year. In the first round, Joshua demonstrated superior boxing skills and would floor Ngannou before knocking him down twice in the second round, with the last one being too destructive for the Cameroonian.

With the win, Joshua is inching closer to another undisputed heavyweight championship opportunity as he is expected to face the winner between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.

Speaking after the victory, Joshua described Ngannou as an inspiration who “can go a long way if he stays dedicated.”

“When I saw the fight with Fury, I thought, damn, this guy could fight, I wanted a piece of that,” said Joshua post-fight.

He added, “He’s an inspiration, a great champion, and this shouldn’t take away from his capabilities. He can come again. I told him he shouldn’t leave boxing. He’s two fights in, and he’s fought the best.”

A shell-shocked Ngannou apologised to his fans “for the letdown.”

“Sorry, guys, I let you all down. Today was a bad day in the office, but tomorrow will be another day. Thank you all for the love.”
