Another Nnewi? Ikorodu residents cry over gas plant built in residential area
When death strikes close to your home, it means you should beware. That’s exactly what residents of the Ikorodu area of Lagos are doing.
Following the Nnewi gas plant explosion on Christmas eve, Ikorodu residents have raised alarm over the construction of a gas plant within the densely populated residential area.
A Facebook user who first shared pictures of the plant expressed shock a gas plant was licensed to be situated in a residential area. He however didn’t name the location of the plant.
NewsroomNG gathered that the Lagos state government under Babatunde Fashola commissioned the Ikorodu Skid Plant at Ewu Elepe Village, Ginti, in October 2013.
The plan, according to the governor, was to encourage Lagos residents to make liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) a preferred choice for cooking.
“We want Lagosians to make a shift using liquefied petroleum gas as a preferred choice for cooking,” he said.
“In Africa, Nigeria is rated the largest producer of LPG yet we are ranked as the lowest in per capita consumption of this product when actually it is exploited in this country and can be made as a source of energy for millions of Nigerians as an alternative to provide electricity for our people,” he added.
LPG is one of the few clean and efficient burning fuels in the world, and has been adopted as one of the ways to control climate change.
However, incidents such as the Nnewi explosion remains a major reason many are yet to adopt the use of LPG.
