About 100 Nigerians who could have been home for Christmas have been burnt to death in three gas explosions, reports say.

The tragedy occurred in Nnewi, Anambra State, around 11:00 a.m. on Christmas eve (that’s today, Thursday December 24, 2015).

It occurred at the Inter Corp Oil limited (LPG Gas Plant), an subsidiary of Chikason Group, reports say.

Witnesses say locals frequent the plant to refill their gas cylinders amid other things.

The first explosion happened as a gas tank was discharging its content, an eyewitness said. The cause of this explosion, which triggered the other two, remains unknown.

It happened while the place crawled with customers. That could explain why the death toll is so high.

Passersby were also affected by the explosions which, according to reports, caused a fire that trapped most of those burnt to death.

Reports say rescue officials were unable to reach most of those who died in the inferno as the fire simply cut them off from those who could have saved their lives.

Several other persons sustained varying degrees of burns.

The burnt corpses of the victims have been deposited at a local morgue.

Please spare a thought for their bereaved families..
