Ambode seals Oshodi Main Market, to “demolish it soon”

The Akinwunmi Ambode led Lagos State government has placed Oshodi Main Market under lock and key.
Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officials and the State Task Force on Environmental Offences were on stand-by when the market was sealed on Sunday.
The presence of the environmental task force could mean Oshodi market was sealed due to the traders’ reported nonchalant attitude to environmental sanitation.
But it seems that may not be the case.
Even KAI Marshal General, Danjuma Maigeri, said he didn’t know why the market was shut as he had been sick for some time and had not been to the office, Daily Trust is reporting.
NewsroomNG reported how traders at the market protested on New Year’s Eve after the government brought a bulldozer to demolish the place.
We gathered the government marked the 38-year-old market for demolition and gave the traders a two-week deadline which expired on December 31, 2015.
The government intends to relocate the traders to a place nearby but a section of the new structure collapsed, we gathered.
“We have not even moved in and the new place has collapsed,” a trader told NewsroomNG.
“What if we move in, can the place take the load? The place is even too small and so cannot contain us.
“They are using this environmental excuse to close down this market. I’m not sure they have plans to reopen it.
“Don’t be surprised if they demolish it soon,” he said..
