Ajayi Crowther University “shut after students protest in church, pour water on VC”

Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) students will not be allowed back on campus till they sign an undertaking promising to be law-abiding, reports say.

The school has reportedly been shut after protesting students allegedly assaulted Vice Chancellor Professor Dapo Folorunsho Asaju.

Some male students of Ibadan and Joseph Adetiloye (JA) hostels reportedly fought over a female student last Friday.

The fight got so serious the VC was “assaulted” after he tried to intervene, reports say.

The VC directed internal security personnel to put the situation under control before it escalated, a 300 Level student told Daily Post.

“When security staff got there, the guys rather than stop the commotion continued,” the student was quoted to have said.

“Some students then poured water on the security personnel. Word got to the VC who decided to personally intervene. On his arrival, the students got violent and said he should leave.

“As the situation got tensed, some yet-to-be-identified poured water and thrash on him. Prof Asaju was so angry that he cursed them and vowed to take action.

“Again on Sunday during church service, some students whose phones were seized disrupted service in protest.

“The VC got up and said since the it appeared students were getting out of control, he would shut the school and punish any one indicted in recent incidents being investigated by the SDC”.

Information available on ACU website, however, said nothing about shutting the school.

“Management at its meeting of Tuesday, 11th April 2017 decided that all students should proceed on Easter Break from Wednesday 12th April, 2017 and must return on Sunday 23rd April, 2017. Mid-semester exam will hold on 27th & 28th of April, 2017,” a statement on the school’s website reads.

Deputy bursar (admin) Shina Bello also denied any plans to shut the school.

“I’m not aware of any assault on the VC,” he told Daily Post.

“The school is not in session and students who have no genuine reason to be around should normally be in their homes”.
