“Focus on your academics” – Minister Of Education urges students to shun protest
In a proactive move to prioritize the safety of students across Nigerian universities, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has advised students to remain on campus during the upcoming Nationwide protest slated for August 1 to 10, 2024.
This advice came through a directive communicated by the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki, in a letter addressed to Vice-Chancellors of universities across Nigeria. The letter, emphasizing the potential risks associated with the planned protests, urged university authorities to take necessary precautions to safeguard their communities and students.
The protests, which are trending on social media with hashtags like ‘#EndBadGovernance,’ ‘#TinubuMustGo,’ and ‘#Revolution2024,’ have drawn considerable attention and sparked a range of reactions from different segments of society.
Government officials, including the presidency and police authorities, have cautioned against participation in the protests, citing concerns over public safety and potential disruptions to normal activities and of properties.
“The Honourable Minister of Education has directed that the attention of Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian Universities be formally drawn to the plan by unknown groups to embark on nationwide protests,” stated the letter from the Ministry. While recognizing the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the Ministry expressed apprehension regarding the safety of university staff, students, and property amidst any protest activities.
As part of the precautionary measures, Vice-Chancellors have been instructed to issue specific statements reassuring their respective university communities of safety measures in place. Furthermore, students have been strongly advised to remain on campus during the protest period, focusing on their academic pursuits and avoiding potential risks associated with large gatherings.
In closing, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring the welfare and security of all university stakeholders, urging vigilance and cooperation from students, staff, and university authorities alike.
