Abuja residents experience building vibrations, fear possible earthquake
Residents in several parts of Abuja have said they experience occasional vibrations of buildings and the ground.
They fear it’s a possible sign of an impending earthquake.
One resident, Bashir Yusuf, said early Friday morning, “Another heavy tremor just occurred at 6.01 a.m. in Maitama, Abuja. Truth is, this seems like a warning for an earthquake. I think the authorities should do some scientific investigation or evacuate residents as a matter of precaution.”
Another resident said, “I felt another house shaking about 20mins ago in Abuja. This is becoming frequent. The authorities are not saying anything. May God save us from natural disaster.”
So far, residents in Gwarinpa, Mpape, Katampe, Garki, Dawaki and Maitama have claimed to have experienced the vibrations.
Authorities in the Federal Capital Territory have, however, called for calm, that the rumblings are most likely not signs of a possible earthquake.
Senator Dino Melaye, who is on the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory tweeted of tremors in his home while calling for calm.
I have informed the FCT Minister and Perm Sec. on the scaring earth movement in some parts of Abuja at 6:11am. I felt earth tremors in my home in maitama too. Measures are been taken to address the problem.
I will keep the FCT administration on their toes on this.— Senator Dino Melaye (@dino_melaye) September 7, 2018
