5 reasons 83% of Nigerian students failed 2018 WASCCE

The West African Examination Council has announced the results of the first series of the new diet of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates in the country.

The Head of the Nigeria Office, Mr. Isaac Adenipekun, said “out of  the 11,307 candidates that sat for the examination between January 29 and February 12, 2018, 1,937 candidates, representing 17.13 per cent, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.”

Adenipekun also said the results of 1,021 candidates, representing 9.03 per cent of the total candidature for the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

The following reasons are responsible for the mass failure recorded by students in 2018 WASCCE:

Exam Malpractice:

Exam malpractice is one of the main reasons students come out poorly in WASCCE. WASCCE is now considered an avenue for school teachers to make money out of Nigerian students, and the parents of the students are also involved in this dastardly act.

More strict penalty should be given to students who are caught in the act. They could be banned from attempting to write WASCCE for a specified long period of years or they are put behind bars.

Laziness:

One of the biggest reasons why students fail WASCCE is laziness.

Once students make up their mind to cheat in an exam hall, it becomes pretty difficult to write the papers successfully because they already cast their hope on cheating.

Nigerian teachers should reiterate the fact that WASCCE success involves hard work and diligence.

Bad Teachers:

The quality of teachers in Nigeria is also to blame for mass failure, as most teachers are believed to have gone into teaching due to the economy, not passion.

Some teachers don’t have what it takes to educate students and these students suffer for it in general examinations.

Some set of teachers are rude, sadists and cruel to students thereby making the students lose interest in their subjects.

Bad friends:

Many students keep very bad friends in school; they skip classes, while many pull off their uniforms at the gate of their houses only to end up in hotels, swimming pools with their school girlfriends.

If you keep friends who don’t mind failing, then you are not far from failing. These friends would make sure they discourage you from studying hard for exams. They also see to it that you join them in skipping classes.

Mindset:

Many students have the mindset that it is easier to cheat and pass exams than to study hard. They would prefer to bribe invigilators, or hire a ‘machinery’ to write the examination.
