14 die in tragic accident at police checkpoint in Osun
At least fourteen people were reported dead in multiple accidents at a police checkpoint along Erin Ijesha-Akure road, Osun State on Thursday.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred as truck lost control and rammed into four vehicles three private cars and an 18-seater commercial bus – at the checkpoint. A survivor is quoted as saying police officers stationed at the checkpoint were allegedly collecting bribes when the incident occurred.
The witness, Prince Adegbite, said the policemen fled the scene immediately the accident occurred.
Operatives of the FRSC and some soldiers were said to have arrived later to carry out rescue operations.
Some of the injured passengers and occupants of the cars crushed by the truck were said to have been rushed to a hospital for treatment while corpses were removed and deposited in a mortuary.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Osun State, Mr Peter Oke, said, “There was an accident along Ilesa-Akure Expressway today (Thursday). The accident was terrible; 24 persons were involved in the crash but 14 lives were lost. They were seven male and seven female.
“Five vehicles were involved in the crash, including a Volvo truck. I think the truck had brake failure and ran over the vehicles. There were Toyota Hiace, Toyota Camry, RAV 4 and Toyota Corolla involved in the accident.”
