19 escape death as bus somersaults on 3rd Mainland Bridge

Nineteen passengers, including the driver of a commercial bus, escaped death after the bus somersaulted on the third mainland bridge on Sunday.

The accident reportedly happened at Iyana Oworo bus lay-by around 1:39 pm, after the bus had departed from Ajah motor park for Iyana-Ipaja.

A gridlock had occurred on the bridge as relevant agencies carried out rescue operations.

First aid treatment was administered to victims after the Lagos State Ambulance Services arrived the scene.

LASEMA boss, Adebayo Tiamiyu, said the accident was caused by a mechanical fault.

“On getting to the scene of the incident, the agency’s response team discovered that a fully loaded Toyota Hiace commercial bus with number plate XR 477 GGE (Lagos), was involved in a lone accident.

“Further investigation by the LASEMA Response Team at the scene revealed that the accident was caused by a mechanical fault as the ball joint of the vehicle broke while on top speed, a situation which resulted in the bus losing control before somersaulting,” Tiamiyu said.

He also confirmed that no life was lost, and the injured victims had been rushed to the general hospital for treatments.

Tiamiyu advised all road users to be cautious of their vehicles’ conditions and to also reduce their speed rate.
