LASEMA Reveals Why Two-Storey Building Collapsed in Mushin
A two-storey building collapsed on Wednesday due to substandard materials. The incident occurred at No. 12 Cameroon Street, Mushin, Lagos, prompting a rapid emergency response.
Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), stated that upon arrival at the scene, the rescue team found that the building was recently built.
Oke-Osanyintolu said no lives were lost, adding that seven people were rescued and taken to Isolo General Hospital for medical attention.
“Seven (7) people – 3 females and 4 males – were rescued alive,” the statement reads.
“The agency’s search and rescue team have searched the rubble and can confirm that there are no victims underneath the collapsed building. The area has been cordoned off.”
In LASEMA’s updated report, the newly completed two-storey building suddenly collapsed onto an adjoining bungalow due to substandard materials used in the construction.
“The collapsed building has been marked for structural and integrity testing by the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory,” the statement reads.
The recent incident contributes to the increasing number of building collapses in Lagos.
Earlier in May, nine people were rescued from the debris of a collapsed four-storey building in the Lagos Island area.
