Yakubu steps down as INEC chairman 500 days ahead of 2027 elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has officially stepped down from his role, handing over the reins of the electoral body to National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the acting chairman.
Yakubu made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
The transition comes as part of internal administrative procedures within the commission. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who represents the South-South region, will oversee the affairs of INEC in an acting capacity pending further decisions from relevant authorities.
Yakubu’s tenure as INEC chairman was marked by several significant electoral reforms and the conduct of major elections across the country.
