World Cup 2018: Nigeria searches for first goalscorer since Osaze Odemwingie
Nigeria’s last goal in a World Cup game was four years ago. The goal came courtesy former Super Eagles striker Osaze Odemwingie.
The former Stoke City striker had scored Nigeria’s only goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 29th minute, in what was the country’s first World Cup win since 1998.
The match was Nigeria’s second game in the tournament.
Today, Nigeria is set to tackle Iceland in her second match of the tournament. The match has been dubbed a make or mar match, with both teams battling for the last slot in their group.
Croatia has already clinched one of only two slots for teams which will qualify from the group, after a shocking but emphatic victory over Argentina Thursday night.
The Super Eagles are yet to find the back of the net in the tournament, after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against Croatia last Saturday.
The last goal to come off the boot of a Nigerian player was an unwanted own goal, courtesy Oghenekaro Etebo.
Anything short of three points for the Super Eagles in the tie against Iceland would leave them on the brink of group stage exit, which last occurred in the 2010 World Cup.
