Why Nigerian universities have not resumed after ASUU called off strike
Since The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, announced what they called a ‘conditional suspension’ of the strike they embarked upon which lasted five weeks, only few Nigerian universities have called their students back
Recall that ASUU went on a nationwide strike on August 14 and called it off on September 18.
According to feelers, the following reasons might be responsible for why some schools have not resumed after ASUU called off strike:
Memorandum of Understanding:
Federal Government promised ASUU, it would implement the Memorandum of understanding in view of the October 2017 timeline agreed upon.
It’s barely some days into October, some schools might decide to wait and see if Federal Government would honour it’s agreement.
ASUU wants the Federal Government to order the release of fund for revitalisation of public universities as spelt out in the 2013 memorandum of understanding (MoU)
Federal Government incessant promises since 1999:
ASUU’s demands has been there since 1999, and it’s becoming a norm that ASUU has to go on strike before government comes alive to its responsibilities.
Second Semester Examination:
Before the schools embarked on strike some of the schools were about to commence the second semester examination, some schools might not have the financial muscle to conduct exams, and might have to wait till October before they call students back.
