Regardless of the genre of music – rock, reggae, pop, contemporary or crossover, there is a general agreement that in order for a song to truly be considered gospel music, the message has to be clear, consistent and Christ-centered, connecting people to God.

While the styles of gospel music have continued to evolve over the years, what truly distinguishes gospel from other genres is the message.

Many of the secular musicians who have risen to become superstars picked themselves up from the curb of the church but shifted their talents into other genres when their style and message are deemed inappropriate for the church. Some were also pushed by commercial forces, their quest for fame and a desire to gain a wider audience which they believe church music cannot offer.

This is why the organisers of the Music and Entertainment Gospel Awards (MEGA) have been recognising the creative works of those artistes who chose to continue using their musical talents to promote the Christian faith.

Femi Akintunde-Johnson, a veteran journalist, who is the National Coordinator of MEGA a lover of the gospel, understands the power of the message in gospel music and the need for the artistes to be more recognised and celebrated.

“The people are so neglected because they chose faith-based music and it’s not everybody that will be ready to accept it,” FAJ told Neusroom. “So we decided to launch MEGA to encourage those motivating men towards God and to exalt the name of God in the midst of people in spite of everything.”

Since its inception in 2013, MEGA has recognised artistes who were in relative obscurity and has pushed their works to national limelight.
