Why Goodluck Jonathan will never become Nigeria’s President again
June 8, 2018
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, should he decide to run for presidency again, would be ineligible.
This is as a result of a constitutional amendment signed into law by President Buhari today.
The amendment stops a Vice President who completes the term of a president from contesting for the office of the President more than once.
The same is applicable to a deputy governor who completes the term of a state governor.
Jonathan completed former President Musa Yar’adua’s term before going on to become a democratically elected President.
The term of a President or a governor can be aborted by virtue of death, resignation or removal, thereby paving the way for the Vice President or deputy governor to take over.
