Why Ganduje may face jail term for money laundering

Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje may spend up to three years in jail for money laundering.

A video of the governor allegedly receiving $5m bribe from a contractor went viral Sunday afternoon.

That sum would amount to N1.8 billion, which ultimately breaches the money laundering act in the Nigerian constitution.

Part 1 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act (2011) states that to make or accept cash payment, “no person or body corporate shall, except in a transaction through a financial institution, make or accept cash payment of a sum exceeding (a) N5,000,000 or its equivalent, in the case of an individual; or (b) N10,000,000 or its equivalent in the case of a body corporate.

The law prescribes a 2-3 years jail term for any offender found guilty.

While the Kano state government is yet to react to the video of its principal allegedly collecting bribe, the FG said on Saturday it had put about 50 prominent Nigerians on its watch list in its resolve to fully implement the Executive Order 6 signed by President Buhari.

Buhari and Ganduje are good allies, and it is not known whether the allegations against the latter would be properly investigated by the EFCC.

One of the implications of Ganduje’s alleged demands, is the award of contracts to incompetent contractors, who would execute substandard projects for the masses.

Ganduje, of the APC, is also expected to seek a second term in office in 2019.
