Why Buhari approved ₦1.1bn for purchase of SUVs for Niger Republic – Finance Minister
Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, has explained why President Muhammadu Buhari approved the release of ₦1.1 billion for the purchase of vehicles for Niger Republic.
The Minister, speaking after the FEC meeting on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, said the approved fund will help Niger “protect their own territory as it relates to security in Nigeria.”

A Nigerian journalist, David Hundeyin, had leaked documents on social media from the Budget Office indicating that on July 28, 2022, the President approved ₦1.145 billion for the purchase of 10 Toyota Land Cruiser V8 vehicles for Niger Republic.
Coming two years after Buhari approved $2 billion for the construction of a railway from Kano state to Niger Republic, the release of funds for the purchase of SUVs for the country has sparked social media outrage amidst complaints about Nigeria’s ailing economy and rising local and foreign debts.
