What’s it with Lai Mohammed and Wole Soyinka?
The Federal Government has expressed its readiness to make the National Theatre what it should be – a magnet for the creative arts.
Information and culture minister Lai Mohammed gave the assurance on Saturday during a courtesy visit to Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka in his office at the Freedom Park in Lagos.
Soyinka had earlier said:
This nation needs a genuine theatre. As long as we keep calling it (National Theatre) a theatre, this nation will never build a theatre.
He also said:
We are not where we were (in the fight against corruption) before this administration took over, but (the government should realize that) corruption will always fight back.
The mohammed-Soyinka meeting trails the uproar that greeted reports that former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, sometime in the past, spent N80 million of state funds to host Soyinka to a sumptuous dinner .
