Wedding party truck plunges off bridge, kills 25 people
At least twenty-five people have been reported killed as a truck carrying over 60 people in a marriage procession fell into a drain on Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway in Gujarat.
Hindutimes reports that the truck was carrying a marriage party when the accident occurred.
Initial investigations indicated the driver lost control causing the truck to swerve off the bridge and fall eight metres (26 feet) onto a dry riverbed in Gujarat state, police said.
It was gathered that around 60 persons were travelling in the truck and most victims are women and children.
Officials indicated the toll could rise, as many of the passengers remained trapped under the truck which overturned. Other injured victims have been rushed to a local hospital.
More than 150,000 people are killed each year with most accidents blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
