We Face Systematic Violence Despite Our Role in Society – Nigeria Sex Workers

The Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA) has called on the relevant authorities to protect its members nationwide from harassment and abuse by law enforcement agencies.

The National Coordinator of the Association, Amaka Enemo, made this appeal in a statement issued on Tuesday.

She lamented that despite the vital role they play in the country, both clients and law enforcement officials assault, harass, and extort sex workers.

Enemo has asked law enforcement agencies to shield its members from these abuse.

She stressed that sex workers also had rights which needs protecting.

“Despite the critical role that sex workers play in the economy and society, they continue to be subjected to systematic violence, discrimination and stigmatisation.

“This violence not only endangers the lives of sex workers but also undermines their rights and dignity as human beings.

“We deserve to work in safety and to live free from fear. It is time for our voices to be heard, and for our rights to be respected,” she stated.
