We did everything to secure the release of aid worker killed by terrorists – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government said it did all it could to secure the release of Hauwa Mohammed Liman, the healthcare worker who was killed on Monday by a faction of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

Hauwa, 24, was killed following threats by the Islamic State’s West African province (ISWAP) to execute her and her colleague, Alice Loksha, if certain demands were not met by the government.

Information Minister, Lai Mohammed said on Monday after news of Hauwa’s death made media rounds that ISWAP’s action was “dastardly, ungodly and inhuman”.

Mohammed said the FG did all within its powers to save her life.

“It is very unfortunate that it has come to this. Before and after the deadline issued by her abductors, the Federal Government did everything any responsible government should do to save the aid worker,” he said.

“As we have been doing since these young women were abducted, we kept the line of negotiations open all through. In all the negotiations, we acted in the best interest of the women and the country as a whole.

“We are deeply pained by this killing, just like we were by the recent killing of the first aid worker,” he added.

Mohammed said the government will continue to work to ensure the release of other women still in the terrorist sect’s custody.

Hauwa’s colleague, Alice, and Leah Sharibu are still being held by the group.
