We are resuming flight operations on Monday – Air Peace tells Neusroom
One of Nigeria’s leading airlines, Air Peace, has told Neusroom that it will restore suspended flights on Monday, May 9, 2022.
Air Peace had earlier announced on Sunday, May 8, 2022, that it would suspend domestic and regional flight operations till further notice in compliance with the decision of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON).
“We regret the inconveniences which this development will cause the flying public. We shall keep you updated as the situation develops,” a statement by Air Peace on Sunday afternoon read.
Stanley Oliseh, the airline’s spokesperson, however, confirmed to Neusroom on Sunday evening that the airline will resume operations on Monday following reports that the AON and the Federal Government have reached a temporary settlement over the hike in the price of aviation fuel.
Oliseh did not give details of the agreement between the government and the AON.
The AON had announced on Friday, May 6, 2022, that all domestic flights would be suspended on Monday over a hike in the fuel price from N190 to N700.
“The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have carried on deploying and subsidising their services to our highly esteemed Nigerian flying public in the last four months despite the steady and astronomical hike in the price of JetA1 and other operating costs,” a statement by AON on Friday read.
“Over time, aviation fuel price (JetA3) has risen from N190 per litre to N700 currently. No airline in the world can absorb this kind of sudden shock from such an astronomical rise over a short period. While aviation fuel worldwide is said to cost about 40% of an airline’s operating cost globally, the present hike has shut up Nigeria’s operating cost to about 95%.”
