VP Shettima: Current Challenges Will Lead to a Stronger, More Prosperous Nigeria

Kazeem Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has assured Nigerians that the current hardships faced under the administration’s policies are necessary steps toward building a more prosperous nation. Speaking at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, Shettima emphasized that the government remains committed to its long-term vision despite the challenges citizens are enduring.

The event, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, brought together stakeholders to discuss the future of democracy in Nigeria. Represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Shettima acknowledged the difficulties caused by recent policies but urged citizens to remain patient, describing the current phase as a transitional period toward a brighter future.

“Our administration is acutely aware of the concerns over our direction and goals, particularly given the difficulties some of our policies inevitably generate,” Shettima stated. “We are correcting many defects in our economy and approaches to securing our citizens. This transition from a broken past to a promising future will not be without a price, but we remain focused on easing the pain and ensuring we do not lose sight of our goals.”

The vice president expressed confidence that Nigerians will ultimately reap the benefits of these policies, describing the current challenges as “unavoidable” but necessary for national growth. “I am convinced that Nigeria shall rise again, answer to its full potential, and lead the way to a future where our country will be a key player on the global stage,” he declared.

Shettima reiterated that democracy, though imperfect, remains the best form of governance. He outlined the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions by addressing economic weaknesses, improving security, combating corruption, and ensuring free and fair elections.

“Democracy is an imperfect system, yet superior to all others,” he said. “We will continue to provide evidence of its value by fixing major weaknesses in our economy, securing our communities, and supporting the independence of the judiciary.”

The Vice-President also called on Nigerians to join the government in what he described as a “challenging but ultimately rewarding journey.” He emphasized that democracy is not just about elections but about fostering a culture of transparent, people-centred governance and holding leaders accountable.

Shettima stressed that democracy must transcend periodic voting and instead focus on delivering tangible benefits to citizens. He highlighted the administration’s efforts to improve governance, promote accountability, and respect the welfare of Nigerians.

“Nigerian democracy must mean a lot more than asking citizens to line up every four years to elect leaders,” he said. “It must mean that leaders commit to the demands of elected leadership in transparent ways, serving the interests of the people, protecting their assets, and ensuring their welfare.”

He added that the best leaders are those who exercise power to promote the interests of their people, including economic welfare, security, and the rule of law. “The voices of citizens must be heard and respected, not just during elections,” Shettima emphasized.

Shettima concluded by urging Nigerians to remain steadfast and support the government’s efforts to build a stronger, more resilient nation. “We will listen, adjust where necessary, and account for our stewardship in all manners our democratic system demands,” he assured.

As the administration continues to navigate the complexities of governance, Shettima’s message was clear: the current challenges are a stepping stone to a brighter future, and with collective effort, Nigeria will emerge stronger and more prosperous.
