VIDEO: “Wasn’t joking when I said Aisha belonged in my kitchen” – Buhari
“My wife’s job is to look after me,” President Muhammadu Buhari told Germany-based DW to clarify he wasn’t joking when he said Nigeria’s First Lady Aisha “belongs in my kitchen, my parlour and the other room”.

After Buhari made the comments in Germany, presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu scrambled to defend his boss saying the comments were mere banter.
“He was obviously throwing a banter,” Shehu said apparently without asking Buhari if he meant every word.
Thanks to Buhari, we now know they weren’t. The president also said his wife should stay off politics.
DW‘s Phil Gayle reporter asked Buhari to clarify the statement.
Here’s how the conversation went…
DW: Recently your wife criticized your choices for top jobs, and you responded by saying “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room.” What did you mean by that, sir?
Buhari: I am sure you have a house … You know where your kitchen is, you know where your living room is, and I believe your wife looks after all of that, even if she is working.
DW: That is your wife’s function?
Buhari: Yes, to look after me.
DW: And she should stay out of politics?
Buhari: I think so.
DW: Now, one of your country’s big acts was the Gender Equality Act, which failed to pass the National Assembly.
Buhari: When it eventually passes, the presidency will look at it as part of our constitutional law.
DW: And you believe that gender equality is a good thing?
Buhari: It is a good thing to the extent that it is accepted culturally throughout the country.
