Vice President Shettima Departs for Senegal to Represent Tinubu at Independence Day Celebrations
Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the West African nation’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.
Shettima left Nigeria on Thursday afternoon and is expected to return on Friday, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha.
“Senegal celebrates its Independence Day on April 4 each year, commemorating its freedom from French colonial rule in 1960. The day is marked by national pride, with ceremonies, parades, and cultural events,” Nkwocha said.
The Vice President’s presence at the event follows an official invitation from Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighting the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Senegal. The celebrations, set to take place at Dakar’s iconic Place de la Nation, will bring together distinguished guests from across Africa and beyond.
Shettima’s visit comes just hours after President Tinubu embarked on a separate trip to Paris for what has been described as a “short working visit.”
According to Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, the President will use the trip to assess his administration’s progress so far.
