VFS Global Opens Africa’s Largest UK Visa Application Centre in Lagos

VFS Global has officially opened Africa’s largest UK Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Ikeja, Lagos, aimed at improving access for Nigerians seeking to travel to the United Kingdom. The centre, which commenced operations on November 19, 2024, marks a significant milestone in enhancing visa processing efficiency across the continent.

The company, which partners with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), provides visa services across 31 African nations. This new facility complements existing VACs in Abuja and Victoria Island, offering applicants expanded options and better services.

Speaking at the launch, Marc Owen, UKVI’s director of visa, status, and information services, described the Ikeja VAC as a testament to the UK’s commitment to streamlining visa access in Nigeria.

“In the year to June 2024, we processed over 225,000 visas for Nigerian nationals,” he said. “This new partnership demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring our visa services are accessible, efficient, and meet the needs of all applicants.”

British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter also expressed optimism about the development.

“It’s a proud moment to see the opening of Africa’s largest visa application centre here in Lagos. Nigeria remains one of the UK’s most strategic partners, and this facility will ensure smoother visa processing experiences,” he noted.

Alok Singhal, head of VFS Global for sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted the company’s long-standing relationship with UKVI.

“We have enjoyed a long-standing partnership with UK Visas and Immigration since 2003 and look forward to now bringing travellers from Nigeria our best in-class services,” Singhal said.

Political Context Adds Tension to Migration Talks

Even as visa services improve, immigration policies have become a contentious issue in the UK. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch recently proposed tougher measures, citing unsustainable migration levels.

“Immigration is at a pace too fast to maintain public services,” she said. “For decades, the political class has presided over mass migration… The system that replaced free movement is not working.”
