USAID Headquarters Closes as Musk and Trump Discuss Agency Shutdown

Staff at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were instructed to work from home on Monday, February 3, 2025. An email sent to employees shortly after midnight informed them that the headquarters, located in the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, D.C., would be closed for the day.

“At the direction of Agency leadership, the USAID headquarters will be closed to Agency personnel,” the email stated, emphasizing that only those with essential on-site and building maintenance roles would be exempt from the remote work requirement.

This decision follows comments made by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and X, who revealed during an X Spaces stream that former President Donald Trump had agreed to shut down USAID. Musk disclosed that he had spoken with Trump, who confirmed, “Yes, we are shutting it down.”

USAID, recognized as the world’s foremost international development agency, is responsible for administering billions of dollars in U.S. aid for global projects, focusing primarily on disaster relief, development, and global health initiatives.

Reports indicate that Trump is considering issuing an executive order to dismantle USAID and transfer its operations to the State Department. The potential shutdown has raised concerns about the future of U.S. aid efforts worldwide.

Compounding the turmoil within the agency, two top security officials have reportedly been placed on administrative leave. This action is believed to be related to their refusal to grant personnel from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), overseen by Musk, access to classified materials in restricted areas.
