US supplies military equipment to Nigeria to support security operations
The United States of America has supplied military equipment to Nigeria to support the country’s ongoing security operations, according to the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM confirmed the delivery in a statement shared on X on Tuesday, noting that the assistance is aimed at enhancing the capacity of Nigerian security agencies in counter-terrorism efforts. The support is part of a wider US initiative to deepen operational cooperation with partners across West Africa.
The development comes shortly after an airstrike on Christmas Day that targeted ISWAP elements in Sokoto. Following the strike, US President Donald Trump warned that further military action could be taken against extremist groups accused of attacking Christians.
In October 2025, President Trump designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing allegations of widespread violence against Christians. He also criticised the country’s leadership, describing Nigeria as “disgraceful,” and threatened military intervention if the government failed to halt the killings.
Nigeria has continued to experience frequent attacks by armed groups, particularly in the northern regions, posing significant security challenges. As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian federal government has not released an official statement regarding the latest US military assistance.
