US Diplomats Arrive Syria to Meet New Islamist-led Rulers
Diplomats from the United States are visiting Syria to hold talks with the country’s new Islamist-led rulers, Neusroom understand.
This much was revealed by the State Department on Friday.
Recall that, ex-president, Bashar al-Assad, was overthrown by Syrian rebels in 2024.
The major talking point following his ouster revolves around human rights.
This has led to demonstrations in Damascus, with protesters calling for democracy.
While Al-Assad’s government featured decades of abuses and years of civil war, the new regime sparks fears of rights infrigement especially among women and minorities.
Another hot topic is the fact that, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which led the ouster of Assad, is proscribed a terrorist group by some nations.
Foreign nations are, tehrefore, curious about what the policies of the new Syrian leaders will be.

The last time US Diplomats visited the capital, Damascus, on a formal mission was in 2011.
At that time, the country was engulfed in the early days of the civil war that occured after Assad began a crack-down on anti-government protests.
The US say they will like to know “their vision for the future of their country and how the United States can help support them,” when speaking about HTC.
