The United Kingdom government has announced plans to issue 45,000 Seasonal Worker visas in 2025 as part of efforts to shore up labour shortages in its agricultural and poultry sectors.

The initiative aims to provide the required support for the nation’s food production by ensuring sufficient workforce availability during peak demand periods.

The seasonal worker visa scheme is designed to provide a pool of temporary labour force for essential roles in food production.

The government has dedicated 43,000 visa slots for horticultural roles, encompassing fruit picking, vegetable harvesting, and flower cultivation.

Additionally, 2,000 visas are designated for poultry sector positions focused on processing tasks between October and December.

According to reports, the visa allocation is part of a broader strategy to provide businesses with the workforce needed during peak seasons.

Who’s eligible for the UK seasonal visa?

Applicants for the seasonal worker visa are mandated to meet specific eligibility requirements, the first being that they must have attained the age of 18.

They must have a valid sponsorship from a licensed UK employer and meet the necessary health and safety standards for their respective roles.

Applicants are also required to provide evidence of adequate funds for their stay and must secure health insurance coverage.

Successful applicants must return home once their employment period ends and cannot convert their visa type while in the UK.

Available roles and how to apply for the seasonal worker visa

The Seasonal Worker visa opens the door to opportunities in a variety of roles within the horticulture and poultry sectors. For the former, workers may be tasked with duties such as planting, pruning, weeding, harvesting, and packing produce.

Poultry workers will typically be saddled with tasks like feeding and caring for the birds, egg collection, processing, and other related duties.

Interested candidates must first secure a sponsorship certificate from a licensed UK employer. Once that’s done, applicants can proceed to submit their visa application through the UK government’s online immigration portal.

For poultry roles, applications must be filed by November 15 each year while horticulture roles have year-round application windows.

In addition to expanding the Seasonal Worker visa scheme, the UK government is investing in technological solutions to reduce its reliance on seasonal labour.

The proposed investments include automation such as robotic harvesters, to improve agricultural efficiency and sustainability.

The government has earmarked up to £50 million to support innovations in agriculture, including robotics and automation technologies.

The extension of the seasonal worker visa programme, renewed in May 2024 for an additional five years, will be in effect until 2029.

The extended timeline is intended to give businesses a window of opportunity to gradually adopt technology-based solutions, ultimately creating a more sustainable workforce model in the UK’s agricultural sector.
