Trump’s Board of Peace announces $5bn Gaza reconstruction pledge
US President Donald Trump has announced that his newly formed Board of Peace is set to convene on Thursday in Washington, DC, where he says $5 billion in funding will be pledged for the reconstruction and development of Gaza.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the board will also commit thousands of troops to an international stabilisation mission aimed at maintaining security and supporting peace efforts in the territory.
The meeting will take place at the United States Institute of Peace, following an earlier session held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos last month.
Trump has described the Board of Peace as the “most consequential body in history,” though its mandate and long-term role particularly beyond Gaza have raised questions internationally. Some countries, including close US allies, have declined to participate, with critics suggesting the initiative could serve as an alternative to the United Nations Security Council.
Meanwhile, Indonesia is reportedly considering contributing about 8,000 troops to the proposed stabilisation force. The mission is expected to play a significant role in the disarmament of Hamas, a key component of the mediated peace agreement endorsed by the Security Council in November last year.
