Tragic Fire at Almajiri School in Zamfara Claims 17 Lives
At least 17 students lost their lives in a devastating fire that tore through an Almajiri school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Tuesday night.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the inferno raged for approximately three hours before it was finally brought under control.
Eyewitnesses say the fire originated from burning sticks, locally known as kara, inside the study hall of Makaranta Mallam Ghali, an Islamic school where about 100 students resided.
Abdulrasaq Kaura, a resident of the area, recounted the harrowing experience:
“It happened inside their study hall. After evacuating the students, they assumed no one was left inside. But when they returned after the fire was extinguished, they started seeing legs and hands—it was heartbreaking. The victims were burned beyond recognition.”
The remains of the deceased students have been buried, while local authorities and emergency responders have arrived at the scene to assist.
Meanwhile, Zamfara State Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar told TheCable that he was yet to verify the details of the incident.
