Five Children Found Dead in Abandoned Vehicle in Nasarawa

Children were found dead inside an abandoned vehicle in Agyaragu, a community in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The tragic discovery has prompted the state police command to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

According to Ramhan Nansel, the spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, the lifeless bodies of the children were discovered on May 4 inside a

disused vehicle parked in the compound of a resident identified as Abu Agyeme.

The victims have been identified as Kamsi Onah (8), Somer Onah (6), Eunice Udouchi (10), Nmasoma Nnaji (10), and Chioma Nnaji (8). The incident was first reported by a local resident, Ozimna Ogbor, who informed the Agyaragu Divisional Headquarters around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In a swift response, Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed ordered the immediate deployment of officers to the scene. The children were quickly transported to Aro Hospital in Agyaragu, where a medical doctor sadly confirmed that all five had died, believed to be from suffocation due to extreme heat inside the locked vehicle.

“This heartbreaking loss serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by abandoned vehicles, especially in the current heatwave,” Nansel said. “Our officers arrived at the scene and found the children unresponsive. Despite efforts to save them, they were declared dead at the hospital.”

The commissioner expressed his condolences to the grieving families and called for heightened vigilance among parents and guardians. “We urge communities to ensure that abandoned vehicles are secured and inaccessible to children,” he said. “No family should have to suffer such a loss.”

He also recalled a similar incident in Keffi in 2019, where two children died under comparable circumstances.

The bodies of the deceased, which bore signs of severe heat burns, were released to their families for burial upon request
