Tragedy in Lagos: Two-Storey Building Collapses in Ikota, Lekki

A two-storey building under construction in the Ikota area of Lekki collapsed on Tuesday night, leaving a trail of devastation and claiming the lives of at least two people. Rescue agencies fear more victims may still be trapped beneath the rubble as emergency responders race against time to save lives.

The incident, which occurred in the bustling Ajah axis of Lagos State, has sent shockwaves through the community. According to Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the cause of the collapse remains unknown.

“The Lagos Territorial Office received a distress call about the collapsed building at Ikota,” Farinloye stated. “Upon arrival, we discovered that a two-storey building under construction had completely collapsed. The immediate cause is still unclear, and further investigations will be conducted.”

So far, the bodies of two males—an adult and a young boy—have been recovered from the wreckage. Five other adult males were rescued with serious injuries and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. However, fears loom that more individuals may still be buried under the debris.

“Information indicates that more people are likely still trapped under the rubble,” Farinloye added, underscoring the urgency of the ongoing rescue efforts.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that search and rescue operations are in full swing. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s spokesperson, revealed that the agency’s heavy-duty equipment has been deployed to the scene to assist in the operation.

“LASEMA, alongside other stakeholders, has been able to rescue several victims,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Our teams are working tirelessly to ensure no one is left behind.”

The collapse has raised concerns about the safety standards of construction projects in the rapidly developing Lekki area, which has seen a surge in building activities in recent years. Residents and onlookers gathered at the scene, expressing grief and frustration over the tragic incident.

As rescue operations continue, authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow emergency responders to do their work unimpeded. Meanwhile, questions about the structural integrity of the building and the oversight of construction practices in the area are likely to dominate discussions in the days to come.

For now, the focus remains on saving lives and supporting the injured and bereaved. The Ikota community waits in hope and anguish as the search for survivors continues.
