Tinubu Swears In New INEC Commissioners, CCB Board Members Amid Electoral Reform Push

President Bola Tinubu on Monday administered the oath of office to new national commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reinforcing the administration’s commitment to bolstering Nigeria’s electoral system.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa ahead of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, featured the induction of Abdulrazak Tukur, representing the North-West geopolitical zone, and Sunday Aja, representing the South-East.

Also inaugurated were two new members of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) — Ikpeme Ndem from Cross River State and Buba Nyaure from Taraba State.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who spoke after the event, hailed the appointments as a critical step toward restoring the commission’s full operational strength.

“With these appointments, we now have almost the full complement of commissioners,” Yakubu stated. He emphasised that a fully staffed commission is vital for the effective execution of its constitutional mandate.

Yakubu also underscored INEC’s ongoing collaboration with the National Assembly to push through critical electoral reforms aimed at strengthening democratic processes across the country.

“We are actively working with the National Assembly on electoral reforms that will improve the electoral process and deepen democracy in Nigeria,” he said.

Amid swirling rumours about his removal, the INEC chairman firmly dismissed the speculation as baseless.

“I remain the Chairman of INEC following the Constitution and the Electoral Act. Any speculation about my removal is unfounded,” Yakubu clarified.

The appointments come at a pivotal time as Nigeria continues to grapple with electoral integrity concerns and public demands for greater transparency and accountability in governance.
