President Tinubu commissions NPF-NCCC to counter cyber-security threats

President Bola Tinubu has pledged to reinforce the Nigeria Police with enhanced weaponry, training, and personnel to strengthen and improve the force after commissioning the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC)

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and the Nigeria Police Force Resource Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, July 25. President Tinubu emphasized the importance of equipping law enforcement to counter emerging cyber threats.

Represented by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Tinubu highlighted the urgent need to address the rise in cybercriminal activities, financial fraud online, and cyber terrorism which exploit digital platforms for disruptive purposes and highlighted the critical necessity of providing law enforcement agencies with the necessary tools, resources, and capabilities to effectively address and combat crime.

How NPF-NCCC Can Improve Nigeria’s Cybersecurity system?

Tinubu pointed out that technological advancements, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and the advent of 5G technology, have widened the scope of cyber threats in Nigeria.

He emphasized that the proliferation of social media since 2020 has worsened issues related to spreading subversive content and inciting violence, necessitating comprehensive cybercrime strategies.

The president reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to fortifying Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework to ensure a secure digital environment conducive to economic growth and national development. He stressed that prioritizing cybersecurity is crucial for safeguarding national infrastructure and for fostering a conducive atmosphere for foreign investments.

Urging Inspector-General of Nigeria Police, Olukayode Egbetokun to maximize the NPF-NCCC’s capabilities, Tinubu envisioned the centre as a pivotal hub in protecting Nigeria’s cyberspace. He called for interagency cooperation and a unified approach among law enforcement bodies to effectively tackle the complex security challenges posed by cyber threats.

Meanwhile, IG Egbetokun highlighted the NPF-NCCC’s role as a revolutionary force in Nigerian policing, leveraging technology, innovation, and collaboration to combat cybercrimes comprehensively. He emphasized that the centre will empower law enforcement personnel with forensic tools and expertise to detect, investigate, and mitigate cyber threats across various domains.
