“You’ve made Nigeria proud” -Tinubu congratulates D’Tigress on historic Afrobasket victory

President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship, held in Côte d’Ivoire.

D’Tigress defeated Mali 78-64 in a dominant performance during Saturday’s final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, cementing their place in history as the only country to win five consecutive Afrobasket titles.

With the win, Nigeria secured an automatic qualification to the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, scheduled to hold in Berlin, Germany.

Reacting to the landmark achievement, President Tinubu praised the team for their excellence and resilience, stating that the players had “made Nigeria proud.” The president also said he looks forward to receiving the champions in Abuja, along with their trophy.

D’Tigress now boasts seven Women’s Afrobasket titles overall, with their first coming in 2003, followed by successive victories in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.

The team remains undefeated in Afrobasket competition since 2015, when they last lost to Cameroon. Their decade-long dominance has firmly established Nigeria as the powerhouse of women’s basketball on the continent.
